Keep reading to find out how long your garage openers and springs will last!
So, how long do garage door openers last?
The average garage door opener will last between 10 and 15 years, although there are other factors that can affect this lifespan. The biggest factors that can improve – or reduce – how long your garage door openers last is the frequency of use and maintenance.
The more often the garage door is opened and closed, the greater the wear and tear on the motor and other parts of the garage door opener. This will reduce the lifespan of the machine and you will likely have to replace it sooner.
Likewise, if you are not maintaining the garage door opener, it will probably not last the 10 to 15 years as expected.
If your garage door opener is making a lot of noise, or if the door is not moving steadily along the track, it may be time for a replacement.
Maintaining your Garage Door Springs
Now that we have addressed the garage door openers, let’s discuss the springs. The springs allow the door to open and close by making it light enough for the garage door opener to lift it. They also help the rest of the garage door components like the cables, rollers, and track.
If the door is not working properly, do not attempt to fix the springs on your own as this could pose a major safety issue – remember that the stability of the entire garage door rests on these!
The two basic kinds of garage door springs are extension springs and torsion springs.
Extension springs are usually mounted above the track or vertically on the sides of the garage door. They have a life expectancy of 7 to 9 years, but they are considered to be failing if there are gaps between the coils.
Torsion springs also have a life expectancy of 7 to 9 years, but these springs are mounted directly above the door. If the daily cycles of opening and closing the door are significant, this lifespan may be reduced to as little as 4 to 6 years.
